The challenge
The industrial weighing systems manufactured by DEM Machines are mainly used in the food, chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
Customers requiring intrinsically safe weighing equipment for hazardous areas such as these require weighing systems manufactured from high quality components.
The company also specialises in the manufacture of explosion-proof weighing systems for pharmaceutical and chemical plants.
These require the use of load cells which are ATEX approved, and Flintec are the manufacturer of load cells which meet ATEX requirements.
The solution
DEM Machines use Flintec's type SB14 load cell, a stainless steel beam type load cell with complete hermetic sealing which is suitable for use in industrial environments.
With a wide range of capacities from 500 to 10,000 lb, it is ideal for use in platform scales, hopper and tank scales.
They also use the type PCB IP68 load cell, a stainless steel single point load cell with complete hermetic sealing, making it perfect for use in harsh industrial environments.
Its wide range of capacities from 50 to 1000 kg makes it ideal for use in bench and floor scales, packaging machines and conveyor scales.
DEM found that standard aluminium load cell used by the industry for harsh environments such as bench scales and inline check-weighing machines start to corrode after about a year. This causes serious problems and most load cells this condition would have to be replaced on a regular basis.
To solve this problem, Flintec designed and produced a stainless steel fully welded single point PCB load cell, which has the same footprint as the standard load cells and easily replaces them.
The result
DEM have found that this PCB load cell out performs the standard load cells and requires less service/calibration intervals. The corrosion problem that existed with the standard load cells is now non-existent.
DEM now manufacture their range of harsh environment weighing systems using the PCB Loadcell.
